Laser-epilation for transsexuality

In the course of a gender change from man to woman, due to transsexuality, the removal of unwanted facial hair (e.g. beard) is on of the most common treatments that are performed. Typically, extensive psychologic consultation and follow-up counseling proceeds any therapy that is necessary to carry out a sex change, in order to ensure that all of the treatment costs are covered by the health insurance provider. Along with these consultations, an additional consultation at the laser clinic is necessary to generate a proposal for a price estimate for laser epilation, so costs may also be covered by the health insurance. Generally there are two methods for permanent epilation (hair-removal):

  1. Electro-epilation (hair-removal with an electric needle)
This procedure is very time consuming and painful and is now-a-days only carried out by few medical doctors in private practice. Treatment is also carried out by electrologists. If the latter performs the treatment, it is advisable to check with the health insurance if costs are covered.

  2. Laser-epilation (Laser-hair-removal)
As current knowledge implies, permanent reduction in numbers of hair, thickness as well as pigmentation of hair can be achieved through the application of various lasers and flash-lamps. However, in order to achieve satisfying treatment results, multiple treatments have to be pefomed. In general, this therapy is free of undesired side effects and in comparison to electro-epilation overall costs are less. Also, in choosing this therapeutic option, a proposal for a price estimate for laser epilation to the health provider is advisable, so costs may be covered by the health insurance. Also, a professional psychologic assessment might be advisable.
